Caring for Suede and Nubuck

Brushing, erasers, protectors and what to never put on napped leather.

5432 W 73rd Pl, Westminster, CO 80003  •  Mon–Fri 9–6, Sat 9–2

Understand the nap

Suede is split leather buffed on the flesh side; nubuck is top-grain sanded on the outside. Nubuck is tougher and finer, but both rely on raised fibers for their look.

Weekly care

Brush with a brass or rubber suede brush in one direction to lift the nap and release dust.

Spot cleaning

A suede eraser handles most scuffs. For oil, apply cornstarch, leave overnight, then brush out.

Never use

Wax polish, saddle soap, water-soaking and heat. Any of these will mat the fibers permanently.

Protection

A quality fluoropolymer protector applied twice a season is the single best thing you can do, especially before winter.
