Waterproofing Hiking Boots the Right Way
Choosing wax, spray or cream based on the leather and membrane in your boots.
Identify the material first
Full-grain leather, nubuck, suede and synthetic mesh all take different treatments, and using a wax on nubuck permanently flattens the nap.
Wax
Best for full-grain leather boots. Heaviest protection, darkens the leather, reduces breathability slightly.
Cream and spray
Right for nubuck and suede. Reapply more often — roughly every four or five outings in wet conditions.
Membrane boots
Gore-Tex lined boots still need the outer leather treated. When the outer wets out, the membrane can't move vapor and your feet get damp from the inside.
Clean before you treat
Any treatment applied over trail dust seals the dirt in. Rinse, brush, dry, then treat.
